About Umbo Traverse City

Tucked into the heart of downtown Traverse City, Umbo is a restaurant built around curiosity, seasonality, and the particular magic of being close to water. We focus on seafood from here and afar, thoughtful beverage, and a constantly shifting menu shaped by Northern Michigan’s farms, forests and docks. Some restaurants arrive fully formed, polished like a showroom floor. Umbo is more like a tide chart scribbled in the margins of a notebook: alive and a little unpredictable in the best way. Founded by husband-and-wife team Cameron Rolka and Sarah Welch, Umbo grew out of years spent cooking in acclaimed kitchens, hosting pop-ups, traveling, collaborating, and asking increasingly specific questions about what they wanted a restaurant to be.

As it was my first time oyster experience I couldn’t have picked a better place to go. The thoughtfulness from the chef and staff at Umbo is hard to deny. I never knew that there were so many options when it comes to oysters. From East and West coast options they had it all. Scallops were incredible, would definitely get again. The culinary experience from the kitchen is impressive. Shout out to Destiny for the excellent service!

We’ve been patiently waiting for Umbo to open. We came the first day they opened not knowing what to expect since it was their first service. We were blown away by the food and hospitality. The oysters were amazing and such a fabulous selection. I love the small, intimate feel of the restaurant. Sarah greats you like an old friend. We tried a little bit of everything and would come back every day if we could. We loved it so much we ended up coming back the next week. I love that the menu rotates seasonal local farm goods. We haven’t been for dinner yet, but we are hoping to soon.

A lovely place with an excellent and delicious mussel selection. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. Even one of the owners took time to chat with us and tell us more about the design of the space and her background. Highly recommend booking a table and going here to check it out. The drink menu was very intentional and the local wine was excellent. Looking forward to going back.

We are so excited to have Umbo in Traverse City! We have been eagerly awaiting their opening and enjoyed the most delicious lunch there today. Not only was the food incredible, but we had the chance to speak with every staff member during our visit, and each person was genuinely kind, knowledgeable, and welcoming. Alex took care of most of our experience, and we couldn’t speak more highly him. Both of the wines they created with Folklor were unique and delicious. The tartare was to die for, and the oysters were the best we’ve had in Northern Michigan. We also loved the prix fixe menu. Every dish was excellent, but the sablefish absolutely stole the show. Amazing food, incredible service, and such a wonderful addition to Traverse City. We already made a reservation to come back!

What a great experience to kick off the summer season. Started off with the Problem Child (house red) and Great Migration (house white) and a chefs choice dozen of oysters. Highly recommend going that route to start the meal. It was a good way to sample oysters from each coast. We followed this up with a few a la carte dishes: the surf and turf tartare, grilled asparagus and burrata, and the Denver steak. Each component of the experience was done with such intention and attention to detail. The Denver steak was cooked perfectly and paired beautifully with a romesco sauce for a particularly delectable bite. The atmosphere is something that is totally unique in Northern Michigan. Getting to see the chefs at work, whether behind the bar preparing the oysters or working by the flat top and oven. Definitely the first of many visits. Such a welcomed addition to Up North! Cheers!
